A Little Guidance for Doctoring Child Nursery Bedding Sets as Your Little Angel Grows Older

September 7, 2009

Safety guidelines are important to know and understand before undergoing the simple process of purchasing crib bedding for your new baby. A number of child protection groups have recommended to select and utilize crib bedding. There are safety guidelines in place for a reason; you don’t want your child to suffocate in his or her sleep.

It is recommended that babies sleep on their backs with no extra cushions in the crib. Even though stuffed toys, pillows, quilts and comforters may look cute, soft bedding items such as these shouldn’t be in cribs with infants. To follow this guidance strictly, only a mattress covered with fitted sheets should be in the crib. A blanket may be used in the crib, but should be tucked in firmly at the foot of the bed and reach no farther than the baby’s chest.

There is no established consensus as to whether or not cribs should have bumpers; even if they are fastened tightly to the rails so that there is no risk of suffocation, some pediatricians maintain that having them in the crib can restrict airflow. The emergence of new baby bumpers may alleviate prior concerns over their usage. One may question the usefulness of crib bumpers, considering their appearance with most baby bedding. There are many different opinions about baby bumpers, so use your discretion to determine whether they make sense for you.

To avoid a suffocation hazard, the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines on minimum bedding should be closely adhered to, until babies reach at least twelve months of age. Prior to age 12 months, however, some adjustments to the crib’s contents may still be necessary to prevent injuries. You must bring the mattress to a lower height, and take out anything that can be used to climb up, by the time your baby can pull up and even before he can sit up. For safety purposes, parents should not use crib bumpers, as children can easily use it as a step to exit their crib.

After your child’s first birthday there is a much lower risk of SIDS, meaning that you can add items to make the crib more comfortable and decorative. Comforters and a matching bed skirt can be used to complement the blue and brown decor. The fuzzy blankets are available in child sizes and they are very cozy and warm. The majority of toddlers like to have stuffed toys to help them get to sleep, and pillows are also good choices for children at least 18 months old.
