Private Medical Insurance Plans And Cost Comparisons
January 10, 2010
If you are self-employed and find yourself in need of obtaining quality medical insurance for you and your family you will be faced with a multitude of options. With all the options you will be faced with, how can you be sure that your decision will be the right one? No matter how much time you spend looking at different medical insurance providers and all the plans they have to offer, you will not be able to know whether the decision you made is the right one or not because that answer lies in unforeseeable events.
Take for example a policy that has all the bells and whistles and costs you and your family $700 per month to have. If your family stays totally healthy for the year then looking back you could say that you should have gone with a plan that was not so comprehensive and cost less therefore saving you money. On the flip side, if your family needs the medical coverage due to an accident or other illness, then you will come off looking like a champ. But life is uncertain and no one can predict the future which makes the decision all that much harder.
Since you have no crystal ball and hind sight is 20/20, here are some factors to consider when determining which policy is best for you and your family:
· Your Budget: Before you begin to look at options for individual medical coverage, determine first how much you can comfortably afford to pay for a monthly premium and then go from there. You also need to take into account how much the policy’s out-of-pocket maximum will be. Will you be able to be meet it without putting any undue financial stress on your family? This annual amount is how much you will have to pay towards health care costs on a worst case scenario. Once your out-of-pocket maximum has been reached your insurance provider will then cover you and your family 100 percent for the remainder of the year. Take the out-of-pocket maximum and then add it to your annual premium and determine if the amount is doable for you and your family. If it is not then you will have to keep looking for coverage elsewhere and try to either find a lower out-of-pocket maximum or a policy with less coverage. It is important to note that out-of-pocket maximums are often tied in directly with the premium price so finding the right combination may be more challenging than you think. Just be sure that no matter what the price of the policy is that you are considering, that it will adequately cover you and your family if disaster hits.
· Insurance Company, Plan, and Agent: Once you determine exactly how much you can afford to pay for your medical insurance over the course of the year the next step is to begin to shop or coverage. There are many wonderful resources on the Internet and many places online will actually provide you with several quotes. Once you find a quote or two you like you can then make a phone call and meet with an agent. Be sure that you are meeting with an insurance provider that you are comfortable with and above all else, be sure that you are going to be comfortable with the insurance agent. Insurance agents can be pushy and intimidating, but they ultimately do not make the call on coverage; you do. Do not let them push you into coverage that you do not need or steamroll you into signing any paperwork at first glance. Simply get information and let the agent know that you will require time to review the coverages. Take the time to be sure that your doctors will be accepted with the coverage and do your homework on all the options that your plan will have. If you find yourself dealing with an ultra-pushy insurance salesperson, tell them that you found a new job and that your insurance will be covered by your new employer at no cost to you. That will work to get rid of them almost every time. Remember, the insurance you will obtain will be for you and your family so you need to be sure that you take your time and address all the needs of your family before you sign anything.
· Meet with your Doctor: A great place to begin when looking for your medical insurance coverage is at your doctor’s office. Take a trip to your personal physician’s office and ask them to give you a list of the different medical insurance companies they accept. You can also ascertain which insurance companies are easier to work with on both the patient and doctor side. Because your doctor’s relationship with your insurance company will be tested on a regular basis, it helps to go with a medical insurance provider that your doctor prefers. This will help ensure that payment is made in a timely manner to your doctor and will make certain an efficient managing of your family’s health care needs. Be sure that you consult with all of the doctors that you and your family use on a regular basis. Once you determine which providers your doctor recommends you can then sift through the provider’s portfolio of policies to find the best coverage possible for you and your family.
Ultimately what you will find many options for you and your family while you search for medical insurance. While it will never be known how much coverage you will need, you should make sure that the coverage you will eventually obtain will be more than adequate and be sure that it will keep you and your family safe in times of need.
